Cost of living overseas

cost1.jpgJust over a month ago I wrote about the cost of living and included a survey from 50 cities. Today’s post is similar except that it looks at 144 cities and includes more information. I was intreviewed yesterday by a writer for the PMI magazine in the US about things to consider when looking at overseas opportunities. Cost of living is certainly one of them and this data is especially useful for those considering their first or next role in a new country.

If you make $100K in New York now, you certainly don’t need a $100k salary in Dubai to have the same amount of money finish up in your bank account because of the UAE’s tax free benefits. Added to the fact that New York is the 10th most expensive city to live and Dubai is only the 25th and you already have a very strong case for switching jobs from NY to Dubai at a lower gross salary.

Moscow is now the most expensive city in the world but London is close behind in 4th. Paris is joint 15th with Istanbul and the Australian city of Sydney has moved up to 19th position.

In the Middle East, Dubai had moved from 73 to 25 in one year which is a clear indication of the spiraling costs that this popular city is now suffering. Its neighbour; Abu Dhabi is close behind in 30th.

Amsterdam has become comparitively cheaper by moving from 24 to 41 and Frankfurt too has dropped from 34 to 61 with Birmingham, UK at 69.

Jeddah on the West coast of Saudi Arabia is joint 100th with Auckland, New Zealand and Karachi, Pakistan is at 140.
